Dell XPS M1710

PC Magazine reviewed Dell XPS M1710 laptop for gamers and picked the laptop as Editor’s Choice with score of 4.5 out of 5 (Very Good), and concluded that it’s “the first red gaming notebook from Dell and the fastest mobile gaming rig we’ve tested, thanks to a new graphics chip and a dual-core processor. Pros include aggressive red styling, nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX, Intel Core Duo processor and Excellent instant-on media software. Cons include expensive and lacks an integrated TV tuner.”

AnandTech concluded that “as far as portable gaming goes, the XPS M1710 is currently one of the best options available — certainly the best I’ve ever used. As for how the XPS M1710 compares with other laptops, we don’t have anything in-house faster right now, but there will almost certainly be competitors in the near future. For now, this is an extremely powerful mobile gaming platform, and it deserves serious consideration if you’re in the market for such a system. The system also looks great, and the 17″ LCD feels huge — you generally sit with the laptop very close to your face, so a 17″ laptop display feels about the same as my 24″ desktop display. This is by no means a complete review, and we will have a follow-up article looking at some specific details, but our first impression is definitely favorable.” However, AnandTech felt that it all depends on your need and the budget.

NotebookReview concluded after review of Dell XPS M1710 that ff this were the state fair and the contest were for best performance notebook, then the blue ribbon would go to the XPS M1710. The coolest thing being, you could even adjust the lights on the M1710 to blue to match that ribbon!

Pros:

Unmatched 3D performance, fantastic for gaming or high-end 3D tasks
Cool and quiet, even when gaming for hours
Very cool looking, especially the lights — could be mistaken as UFO from a distance
Great keyboard
Nice screen, very bright and good colors

Cons:

Wireless problems, for this pre-production unit at least
Area below LCD and top of keyboard has some flex
No PCMCIA card slot for any accessories you had for older notebooks
Want it? Show Dell the money! Premium notebooks command a premium $$ price.

CNet meanwhile gave a rating 8.2 out of 10 (Excellent) and as with PC Magazine, picked the gaming notebook as Editor’s Choice. Cnet concluded that if you’re a hard-core gamer looking to play the newest games at the highest settings, this is the best system that (a lot of) money can buy. Good points include best-in-class gaming performance, top-shelf processor and graphics engine, attractive illuminated case, solid multimedia features, full assortment of ports and connections. Bad points again is expensive price and display not remarkably bright.

Laptop Magazine (link dead) rated XPS M1710 4 star out of possible 5 and concluded that the downside to the entire package, of course, is price. The base $3,400 is not for the faint of heart, and premium configurations will strain almost any budget. A big payoff is guaranteed, however, especially for gamers who want the best balance of performance and portability. There’s little to compete with this powerhouse.

Hot Hardware (link dead) gives Dell XPS M1710 9 out of 10 in its Heat Meter and concludes that “Dell XPS M1710 is an ideal solution for anyone looking to have desktop-class power and functionality within a notebook. Whether you’re an avid gamer, power user, or multimedia junky the XPS system is certainly aimed to please. Although we’ve tested other high-end notebooks here in the past, no system to date has been able to provide the sheer level of performance and versatility we have seen in testing the XPS M1710. When factoring in the warranty, service, aesthetics, and performance of the system, it is hard to find a more desirable notebook than the XPS system. Though we would love to have seen the obscene numbers the XPS would have achieved were it offered with an SLI configuration, we were still nothing short of blown away by the system’s overall performance. With this in mind, we have no choice but to award the Dell XPS M1710 a rating of 9 on the Hot Hardware Heat Meter and are giving it an Editor’s Choice away. We thoroughly recommend this system to anyone in the market for a new DTR notebook.”

The model I tested – 120GB hard drive, 1024MB of RAM, DVD-RW – starts around £1299 plus VAT, but there’s also a £999 plus VAT model with lesser specs.

Stuff (link dead) reviews Dell XPS M1710 and concludes that if all you use your computer or laptop for is to send a few emails, check the internet during the day and write some letters to friends, then you can skip this product review, it isn’t for you. There is no doubt that the XPS M1710 is for the dedicated hardcore gamer with deep pockets, who must have the latest and greatest with which to frag his friends. The price-tag will put a few people off, but the XPS M1710 is one of the best gaming laptops around.

BIOS (link dead) picks Dell XPS M1710 as editors’ choice with rating of 9 and concludes that Dell has again delivered one of the most advanced laptops to the gaming community, especially customers who want the performance and freedom to play intensive games such as Oblivion and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter anywhere. And if you want to draw attention at your next gaming soiree, the XPS M1710 is just the ticket. Even with nVidia’s GeForce Go 7900 GTX graphics chipset and the fastest Intel Core Duo processor available, it’s still the best gaming laptop deal in town.
