Paint 3D is the new modern universal UWP app for Windows 10, which bundled natively starting from Windows 10 Creators Update version 1703. Paint 3D redesigned the classic Paint app, and adds brushes, markers and other art tools which allow users to create and edit 3D objects.

With the introduction of Paint 3D, a new right click context menu entry named “Edit with Paint 3D” has been added to several type of image formats. The “Edit with Paint 3D” option stays even though you have chosen to uninstall Paint 3D app. To make matter worse, when you accidentally click or tap on “Edit the Paint 3D”, the Paint 3D app will be reinstalled automatically.

So removing the “Edit with Paint 3D” option when right clicking on images and 3D objects is essential to completely get rid of Paint 3D app. It helps also if you want to clean up the longer right click contextual menu, even though you’re keeping the Paint 3D.

This tutorial shows how to remove the “Edit with Paint 3D” entry from the context menu.

Export and backup the registry keys affected so that you can restore the “Edit the Paint 3D” feature in future as and when you need it again. Reinstalling Paint 3D app WILL NOT restore the “Edit the Paint 3D” context menu option.
  1. Run Registry Editor (RegEdit).
  2. Navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAssociations\.bmp\Shell
  3. Right click on the 3D Edit and select Delete to remove the key.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  5. Repeat the deletion process above for “3D Edit” of following registry keys:

  6. Voila! Edit the Paint 3D is no longer showing on the context menu when right clicking on images.
